JEFFERSONIAN GARDEN   MCLEAN, VA

The Owner’s lifelong interest in the Jeffersonian style inspired and guided LAPIERRE STUDIO’s design for this gentleman’s garden, which now delights his family and friends, and continues to provide places for him to observe, learn and experiment in his growing interest in the care and cultivation of individually selected specimen woody plants, espalier material – both ornamental and fruiting, and annual flowers, all of which provide unlimited subjects for his photographic prints.  Belying its location in suburban northern Virginia, this fully enclosed three-quarter acre site creates a compact, yet unique and private, garden oasis of clipped yews, masses of peonies, formal gravel paths, and meandering woodland plantings.  Transecting the rear garden is an Asian-inspired dry gravel streambed, including an automatic misting spray that keeps the black Mexican pebbles in optimal appearance while visitors tour the garden.  LAPIERRE STUDIO’s services began with initial site selection, building location, architectural shaping, and modifications that optimize building to landscape relationships, especially as related to capturing favorable garden window views, and removing undesirable offsite view lines.  Design and construction phase services spanned initial base building work with the builder, and custom site and garden work directly with the Owner. The gardens and grounds have continuously evolved over the years, with LAPIERRE STUDIO providing the Owner with ongoing property and landscape management, design adjustments, and design/build construction services related to new gardens, drainage adjustments, sculptural additions, planting adjustments, shaping, and replacements as needs be.
