CORPORATE OFFICE OASIS RESTON, VA

Measuring just fifty-feet square, the hillside space left over between twin suburban office buildings was transformed into an engaging multi-level urban plaza that interprets the essential natural elements of a desert oasis into a modern architectural composition, contrived to provide welcome sensory relief, and a variety of places for contemplation, reflection, and social gatherings for business hour inhabitants of the surrounding clusters of corporate office facilities. Overhead, a third floor bridge way connects the paired 90,000 SF structures, and combines with the controlled landscape shade, summer breezes, and flowing water elements, all working together in orchestrated harmony, to create an alluring outdoor space and comforting natural micro-climate, located within the midst of a ubiquitous, ever growing expanse of suburban office park, entrance plazas, and parking lots. Carved billet alloy waterspouts emerge from poured-in-place textured concrete retaining walls, and join the cascading water wall effects and terraced plantings, while overlooking an inviting still pond. Water steps provide an invitation to sit and reflect at the water’s edge, while overhanging Heritage River Birch and Cut leaf Japanese Maples provide natural landscape allusions while engaging the overhead architectural bridge way. Seasonal change, by way of native hardwood, perennial, and annual planting textures, color, and shade, combine with the terracing twelve foot grade change to provide ever changing spatial experiences, while wall and paving materials, textures, and patterns extend throughout the water basin surfaces, thus assuring year round visual and aesthetic appeal.
