JANNEY HOUSE - GARDEN RESTORATION  ALEXANDRIA, VA

Situated in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, the owner of the historic John Janney house gave LAPIERRE STUDIO the opportunity to restore and enhance the garden. The home dates back to 1760, in 1851 the home was ‘improved’ with a Victorian mask.  One hundred years later, in 1960, the owners worked a full year to restore the house and gardens as close to its original state as possible.  The current owner wanted to refine the garden with clean edges, distinct spaces and privacy plantings. Through the design process LAPIERRE STUDIO identified six garden regions, lawn, maze garden, bower, entrance, brick terrace and flagstone patio, that will serve as functional spaces for garden strolls and socializing. Each garden region is defined by brick walls with limestone coping that compliment the Georgian architecture of the house, limestone edgings to contain plant beds and the cast iron fountain, traditional paving materials laid in unique patterns and plantings with diverse textures and forms.
